From humble beginnings as a Syracuse-based coal company to its current-day status as a modern, diversified, women-led business that spans two states and employs dozens of people, the history of Irish Companies has certainly been a colorful one.
Founded as the R.N. Irish Coal Company, the Irish Companies began to take on their modern form after World War II when founder Ralph Irish’s son Bob took the reins ad began to evolve the company to meet the needs of a changing nation. Working side by side with his wife Marcia, Bob began to explore opportunities in industrial gases and welding supplies, later adding propane delivery to the mix by helping local companies convert their forklifts to the efficient but little-known alternative fuel.
Driven by Bob and Marcia’s passion for hard work, happiness, and family, Irish Companies continued to grow and evolve, diversifying by adding carbonic services to its stable of Buffalo- and Rochester-area offerings. The company later expanded its service area into Ohio.
Today, the Irish Companies bear little resemblance to the company that Ralph Irish started in 1932, except in one important way: then, as now, serving you – our loyal customers – continues to be at the heart of all we do. By putting you first and offering there-whenever-you-need-us service, fair and honest pricing, and convenient services to make life easier for you, we continue to live up to the great example our founders set for us more than 85 years ago.
