Propane Safety Reminders for the Winter

An important checklist

propane delivery new yorkWinter has already hit parts of Central and Western New York hard. Because Irish Propane cares about your safety and our ability to safely and reliably deliver for you, here are a few important reminders for the season—especially in the days before, during, and following a storm.

Here are six ways to help keep your family (and the Irish Propane delivery and service crew) safe this season:

  1. Keep the path to your propane tank clear. Regularly remove any snow or ice that may have accumulated so that it’s always easy to reach your tank for maintenance, gas level monitoring, and refilling.
  2. Make your propane tank easy to spot even after a heavy snow or during low visibility conditions by attaching a bright flag to the top of it. You’ll be helping our delivery crew find your tank (even in bad weather) and to safely position their delivery trucks.
  3. Keep your propane tank free of snow and ice. One you’ve cleared a safe path to your propane tank, use a broom to clean snow and ice off the tank itself. Don’t use a shovel for this. A shovel could puncture your tank and lead to a propane gas leak.
  4. Regularly check your vents and flues for obstructions. This important safety step will help prevent a build-up of carbon monoxide in your home. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that can lead to serious medical emergencies. So, you should also test your carbon monoxide detectors monthly and replace the batteries about every six months. And if your carbon monoxide detector is 7 years or older, it’s time to replace it.
  5. Carefully monitor your propane level. The colder it gets, the more often you should check your fuel levels because your usage can change dramatically. Call Irish Propane before your tank is less than ¼ full. Our experienced delivery team will be sure to get you the propane you need any time, any day, and in any weather.
  6. Know what to do if there’s a leak. Make sure everyone in your family knows what to do if they think there’s a gas leak. Hint: It will smell like rotten eggs. Click here for instructions on what to do.
